Saie is driving beauty’s climate action—committing to net-zero carbon emissions by 2039, reducing plastic waste, and pushing the industry toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
Creating clean and sustainable beauty isn’t only about personal health—it’s also about environmental sustainability. That’s why in 2019 I launched Saie, a clean beauty brand with a people-and-planet mission to create positive change, after struggling to find high-quality makeup that didn’t harm my skin, body, or the planet. As a brand that benefits from the planet’s resources, we have a duty to take action, which is why we signed The Climate Pledge in October 2024.

Fighting for the planet has been central to Saie’s ethos from the start. A month before signing The Climate Pledge, we launched The Saie Climate Initiative, a longstanding dream of mine to transform our responsible practices into direct climate action. The first pillar of this initiative is reaching net-zero carbon emissions across all scopes by 2039. Signing The Climate Pledge and leading its beauty charter was a natural next step—not only because we are already working toward this goal, but also because we don’t want to, nor can we, achieve it alone. We’re joining leaders across 60 industries to drive science-based climate commitments as the standard for every brand you support.

Achieving net-zero carbon emissions within 15 years is ambitious. But as I’ve learned from building a company in an unregulated industry, big goals require bold action. Climate scientists have long warned us that staying below 1.5°C of global warming is critical to avoiding the worst effects of climate change. To meet this goal, global CO₂ emissions must be reduced by nearly half by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050. We believe beauty must move faster.

The second pillar of The Saie Climate Initiative tackles beauty’s massive environmental impact. The industry annually generates 120 billion units of plastic that pollutes oceans, landfills, and even our food chain in the form of microplastics, according to Pact Collective, a non-profit helping beauty brands reduce packaging waste. This plastic crisis is overwhelming our planet. That’s why we are committing to collecting 5 million pounds of ocean-bound plastic waste by 2027 through our partnership with leading plastic action platform rePurpose Global. Its global collection sites and innovative plastic recovery techniques make this possible.

The third pillar is leadership. Women and children are disproportionately affected by climate change and face barriers including a lack of resources during disasters and economic instability. That’s why The Saie Climate Initiative is guided by an all-women board of experts, ensuring we stay accountable. Current board members include Svanika Balasubramanian, cofounder & CEO of rePurpose Global; Sydney Feeter, senior director of clean makeup at Sephora; and myself.

Beyond these three commitments, we believe education is key to change. Last year, we launched The Saie Way, an ongoing climate docuseries highlighting our sustainability journey. Each episode explores a different sector of our business, such as partnering with a carbon-neutral packaging company for our product cartons and working with a closed-loop manufacturer to create Sephora displays made from 100% recycled materials.

This year, in collaboration with The Climate Pledge, we are filming two new episodes showcasing rePurpose Global’s plastic-recovery sites in Colombia and its circular recycling system. Sharing these stories is essential because reaching net-zero carbon is only possible if we achieve it together. By amplifying the work of climate leaders and changemakers, we create a ripple effect—spreading awareness and inspiring others to take action.

As we join this global movement, we reaffirm our commitment to transparency, innovation, and collaboration. This isn’t just about our brand, it’s also about pushing an industry toward meaningful change. By sharing our journey, we hope to empower others. The fight for our planet is one we must take on together. The road to net-zero carbon is challenging, but we’re ready to meet it with determination, creativity, and an unwavering belief that a better future is within reach.
